What are the main missions and responsibilities of this role?

The primary mission is to translate group-level ESG ambitions into actionable divisional plans. You will be responsible for leading the implementation of climate, environmental, and social goals, ensuring that sustainability is not just a policy but a core part of daily operations and decision-making. You will also own the divisional performance monitoring, tracking KPIs related to net-zero progress and social impact. This includes gathering and validating data for external disclosures and supporting commercial teams with ESG expertise during bidding processes and client engagements.

Key learning opportunities for this job

In this role, you will gain deep exposure to complex reporting frameworks such as TCFD, CSRD, and SECR within the specific context of the UK property sector. This provides a specialized understanding of how greenhouse gas protocols apply to residential management portfolios. Additionally, as part of the ESG Steering Group, you will benefit from high-level exposure to corporate governance and strategic decision-making. Working closely with the Head of ESG offers at-scale mentorship in driving organizational change across a large, diverse workforce.

How does the ideal candidate look like (experience, skills)?

The ideal candidate brings proven experience in corporate carbon accounting and environmental performance management. You should be comfortable navigating data-heavy reporting requirements while also possessing the soft skills needed to translate that data into compelling stories for stakeholders. A degree in environmental science or a related field is expected, ideally complemented by a professional certification like IEMA or ISEP. Experience in professional services or property management is a significant advantage, as is a track record of supporting commercial bid processes.

Advice to stand out and make a successful application

Focus your application on your ability to translate strategy into operational reality. Provide specific examples of where you have implemented sustainability initiatives that changed how a business unit functioned on a day-to-day basis. Since FirstPort emphasizes being 'Simple' and 'Clear', ensure your CV and cover letter avoid heavy academic jargon. Demonstrate that you can communicate complex ESG topics in a way that is accessible to operational teams who may not have a technical sustainability background.

What aspects of the company's sustainability is this role likely to focus on?

The role focuses heavily on decarbonization of the built environment, which is one of the most significant challenges in the residential property sector. You will likely work on energy efficiency projects and transition plans to meet net-zero targets for the properties under management. There is also a strong emphasis on Social Value and governance. You will help define how property management can contribute to community well-being and ensure that the company's multi-year ESG programme is properly embedded into procurement and project delivery.

What are the main challenges someone in this role might face?

One of the main hurdles will be driving behavioral change across a large organization with diverse divisional priorities. You must convince operational leaders that ESG considerations are a driver of business value rather than just a compliance box-ticking exercise. Managing data quality and collection across thousands of residential sites can also be challenging. Ensuring the accuracy of carbon footprint measurements and social impact metrics requires meticulous attention to detail and robust process management.

How could a typical day look like for someone in this position?

Your day might begin with a Steering Group meeting to discuss the progress of the multi-year ESG roadmap. From there, you might pivot to analyzing divisional carbon data or preparing a dashboard for the leadership team to highlight risks and opportunities. Afternoons could be spent collaborating with the procurement or operations teams to embed sustainability criteria into supplier contracts, followed by providing technical input for a new business bid or a resident-facing sustainability initiative.

What are the opportunities for professional growth and development in this role?

Growth in this role is high-profile, as you are part of a central steering group in an industry undergoing rapid transformation. Success here can lead to more senior strategic leadership roles within the Group ESG function. You will have access to accredited training programmes, allowing you to stay ahead of evolving regulations and standards. The role’s exposure to the executive leadership team provides a direct path to high-level corporate influence.

The main stakeholders you might be interacting with

You will operate as a trusted advisor to the Divisional Leadership Team while maintaining a functional link to the Group Head of ESG. This dual reporting requires strong relationship management and navigation of matrix structures. Externally, you will interact with clients, developers, and industry bodies such as ARMA or the British Safety Council. Internally, your success depends on close collaboration with HR, Finance, and Procurement to ensure ESG consistency across all functions.
