What are the main missions and responsibilities of this role?

The apprentice will support the National Sustainability Department in managing corporate social responsibility duties. This includes preparing extra-financial reports such as EcoVadis and BDESE, tracking key environmental indicators like carbon and energy, and ensuring compliance with the ISO 14001 standard. On the operational side, you will assist engineering teams in integrating sustainable practices into their daily work. This involves helping with life cycle assessments (LCA), developing methodological tools for decision-making, and contributing to the sustainability section of commercial bids for large-scale infrastructure projects.

Key learning opportunities for this job

This role offers deep exposure to the transition from voluntary ESG reporting to mandatory compliance under the CSRD and EU Taxonomy. You will gain hands-on experience in carbon accounting and the practical application of environmental management systems within a complex engineering environment. Furthermore, you will learn how sustainability is commercially integrated into public and private tenders. By interacting with technical experts across various sectors like energy and mobility, you will develop a specialized understanding of how to apply green engineering principles to real-world infrastructure.

How does the ideal candidate look like (experience, skills)?

The ideal candidate is a Master’s level student from an engineering or business school specializing in sustainability or environmental management. You should possess strong analytical skills and a high level of proficiency in Excel for data processing and PowerPoint for executive reporting. Beyond technical knowledge of carbon footprints and regulations, soft skills are paramount. Egis looks for someone with excellent interpersonal skills and pedagogical ability, as you will need to explain complex environmental concepts to diverse operational stakeholders and project managers.

Advice to stand out and make a successful application

To stand out, demonstrate your specific interest in the civil engineering and construction sector. Mentioning your familiarity with tools like Bilan Carbone® or specific environmental software will show you are ready to hit the ground running. Tailor your application by highlighting any previous experience where you had to synthesize complex data into clear reports. Since the role involves internal communication, showing a portfolio or examples of educational content you have created for sustainability purposes can be a significant advantage.

What aspects of the company's sustainability is this role likely to focus on?

The focus is split between corporate sovereignty (regulatory monitoring and reporting) and project-level transformation. You will be instrumental in ensuring that Egis's activities align with the 2050 carbon neutrality trajectory through precise monitoring of mobility and energy data. A significant portion of your impact will come from supporting 'eco-conception' initiatives, ensuring that the engineering designs of today minimize the environmental footprint of the infrastructure built tomorrow.

What are the main challenges someone in this role might face?

One of the primary challenges will be the coordination with diverse operational entities across 60 locations in France. Encouraging busy engineering teams to prioritize sustainability metrics over traditional performance indicators requires persistence and diplomacy. Additionally, maintaining regulatory compliance in a fast-evolving landscape (CSRD, Green Taxonomy) requires constant vigilance and the ability to translate legal requirements into actionable internal processes without overwhelming the staff.

How could a typical day look like for someone in this position?

A typical day might begin with analyzing energy consumption data for the quarterly carbon report, followed by a meeting with a commercial team to help draft the environmental impact section for a new tramway project. In the afternoon, you might focus on regulatory watch to update internal guides, then finish by creating visual communication materials to animate the internal network of sustainability ambassadors. The role is a mix of solitary data analysis and highly collaborative workshop facilitation.

What are the opportunities for professional growth and development in this role?

As an apprentice within a group undergoing hyper-growth, you are in a prime position for a permanent role. Egis frequently recruits from its intern and apprentice pool for Junior Sustainability Consultant or Project Manager positions. You will build a massive professional network within the French engineering landscape, gaining visibility with both Corporate Sustainability leads and operational business unit directors, which is invaluable for long-term career progression in ESG.

The main stakeholders you might be interacting with

You will report to the Direction Développement Durable France and work in close coordination with the Corporate Sustainability team. This provides a bridge between high-level strategy and local implementation. External interactions may include reporting agencies while internal stakeholders include Project Managers, Bid Managers, and various support functions like HR or Procurement, all aimed at fostering a unified approach to the company's environmental impact.
