In this Paris-based position at Planète Urgence (part of Groupe SOS), you will spearhead the organization’s carbon and climate intervention strategy. You will oversee forest-carbon project certification, drive climate adaptation methodologies, and serve as the core technical expert across international delegations.

Working across vulnerable biodiversity hotspots in Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia, your leadership directly impacts high-integrity nature-based carbon solutions. You will guarantee methodological rigor under standards like Verra ARR, ensuring restoration projects deliver genuine climate resilience, local socio-economic benefits, and measurable carbon sequestration.

This suits someone who blends deep technical fluency in carbon certification with field-oriented pragmatism, strong cross-cultural empathy, and the ability to train international teams on complex climate metrics.

Job FAQs

What are the main missions and responsibilities of this role?

The primary mission of the Responsable Climat is to structure and coordinate the climate and carbon strategy of Planète Urgence across its global programs. This entails managing the structuring, registration, and formal certification of forestry and nature-based carbon projects, ensuring total compliance with standards such as Verra ARR methodologies. You will also build internal capacity across six national delegations in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. This includes training operational teams, maintaining quality control over carbon reporting and monitoring protocols, and mitigating technical, legal, and regulatory risks associated with carbon projects. Additionally, you will drive the organization's own corporate carbon footprint assessments, represent Planète Urgence in international climate networks, and contribute high-level technical expertise to proposals for climate funders and corporate donors.

Key learning opportunities for this job

This position offers deep, practical immersion in high-integrity voluntary carbon markets and Nature-based Solutions (NbS). You will deepen your hands-on mastery of carbon accounting methodologies, particularly Verra standards such as VM0033 for Afforestation, Reforestation, and Revegetation (ARR). You will also gain invaluable field-level insight into how climate adaptation intersects with biodiversity protection and local community livelihoods across diverse ecosystems in Cameroon, Benin, Madagascar, Ecuador, Indonesia, and Cambodia. Finally, being embedded within Groupe SOS exposes you to Europe's largest social solidarity network, offering real cross-sector learning in social entrepreneurship, NGO governance, and international climate philanthropy.

How does the ideal candidate look like (experience, skills)?

The ideal candidate brings solid experience in carbon project development, environmental engineering, or forestry with dedicated technical expertise in ARR carbon certification and Verra frameworks. Prior experience coordinating multi-stakeholder international cooperation or NGO development programs is critical. Technically, you should excel at complex carbon accounting, audit management, and monitoring, evaluation, accountability, and learning (MEAL) systems. Strong analytical, writing, and presentation skills in French and English are required to navigate international auditing bodies and local partners. On a personal level, you need high intercultural sensitivity, pedagogy to support remote field teams, and a collaborative, pragmatic approach suited to non-profit field realities.

Advice to stand out and make a successful application

To stand out, highlight concrete examples of carbon certification lifecycles you have managed from inception through audit and credit issuance, particularly under Verra standards or comparable voluntary market mechanisms. Demonstrate your understanding of the social dimension of nature-based carbon projects. Planète Urgence prioritizes local community empowerment alongside ecological restoration, so applications that balance carbon mathematics with ethical, community-centric project delivery will resonate strongly. In your cover letter, articulate your vision for navigating changing global carbon regulations and show how you foster alignment and trust across geographically dispersed, multicultural teams.

What aspects of the company's sustainability is this role likely to focus on?

The role sits at the critical intersection of climate mitigation, ecosystem restoration, and social resilience. Planète Urgence operates precisely where deforestation threatens biodiversity and vulnerable communities, meaning every project must deliver verified climate benefits alongside community uplift. You will focus heavily on methodological transparency and the ecological integrity of afforestation, reforestation, and revegetation (ARR), preventing greenwashing and ensuring that carbon credits stand up to the most demanding international scrutiny. Furthermore, you will steer internal environmental accountability by managing the regular calculation and reduction of Planète Urgence's own organizational carbon footprint.

What are the main challenges someone in this role might face?

A primary challenge will be navigating the fast-evolving regulatory and technical environments of voluntary carbon markets, which face increasing external scrutiny regarding durability, leakage, and additionality. Another significant hurdle involves bridging headquarters strategy with complex field operations across six distinct country offices. Varying local governance contexts, remote field logistics, and uneven digital connectivity require exceptional adaptability and patient change management. You will also face peak workloads tied to auditing cycles, donor reporting deadlines, and certification milestones, demanding sharp prioritization and resilience under pressure.

How could a typical day look like for someone in this position?

A typical morning might begin with a review of tree-planting survival and biomass monitoring data shared by field teams in Madagascar or Cambodia, followed by a technical alignment call with an external carbon audit firm. In the afternoon, you might lead a capacity-building workshop for country directors on climate adaptation indicators, before pivoting to review technical documentation for an ARR project undergoing Verra validation. You could end the day drafting technical inputs for a major philanthropic donor pitch or synthesizing data for the NGO's upcoming internal carbon footprint report.

What are the opportunities for professional growth and development in this role?

Within Planète Urgence and the wider Groupe SOS ecosystem, this role positions you as a leading technical authority on international carbon finance and climate resilience. Successful stewardship of these programs can pave the way toward executive programs leadership or technical director roles. You will build strong visibility within global climate networks, institutional donors, and carbon auditing bodies, establishing yourself as a sought-after specialist in high-integrity NbS. Additionally, Groupe SOS offers transversal mobility across its various impact-driven subsidiaries, incubators, and consulting practices focusing on environmental transitions.

The main stakeholders you might be interacting with

Internally, you will work closely with country directors and field coordinators across the six international delegations, providing continuous methodological guidance and operational support. You will also collaborate with the Paris headquarters leadership, including the development, communications, and MEAL (Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning) teams to shape funding proposals and impact reporting. Externally, you will maintain active relationships with carbon certification bodies (such as Verra), third-party auditing firms, environmental consultancies, institutional donors, and private climate philanthropists.
