In Brazil, the sustainable footwear brand Veja is making significant strides toward reducing plastic waste by partnering with local recycling cooperatives, known as Catadores. These waste workers play a crucial role in tackling the problem of plastic pollution and the environmental impact of discarded footwear.
Every year, over 24 billion pairs of shoes are produced globally, contributing massively to landfill waste. Fast fashion exacerbates the issue, promoting a culture of disposability where consumers rapidly replace their footwear, leading to an increased carbon footprint. Traditional shoe materials, particularly petroleum-based synthetics like polyester, contribute to significant environmental degradation, from water pollution to greenhouse gas emissions.
In an effort to combat this trend, Veja has established a partnership with the ACAMTC recycling cooperative in Minas Gerais, Brazil. This collaboration has resulted in a fully traceable supply chain that utilizes 100% post-consumer recycled polyester sourced from PET plastic bottles. The initiative provides the brand with transparency on the origin of its materials while reinforcing the livelihoods of the Catadores, who now earn significantly more for their collected plastics.
In 2023 alone, Veja purchased six million PET bottles from these cooperatives, which not only boosts local economies but also strengthens the recycling system. The cooperative model allows for an equitable distribution of resources while ensuring environmental sustainability. Each bottle repurposed saves natural resources and helps reduce landfill waste.
Veja’s approach also includes innovative textile production processes, such as dope dyeing, which reduces water usage and does not contribute to chemical pollution. However, experts caution against viewing recycled materials as a comprehensive solution to the waste crisis. A focus on sustainability must also confront issues around consumption and overproduction in the fashion sector.
Through initiatives like a shoe repair program, Veja encourages consumers to extend the life of their footwear, championing a mindset shift toward sustainability. By integrating social justice and environmental care, Veja exemplifies how brands can support local communities while committing to sustainable practices.
