U.S. Rejection of UN SDGs Sparks Controversy in Sustainability Dialogue

8 marzo 2025

The U.S. government has officially rejected the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), a significant shift announced under the Trump administration. During a session at the UN General Assembly, Edward Heartney, Counselor for Economic and Social Affairs at the U.S. Mission to the UN, declared that the U.S. “rejects and denounces” the SDGs, which were adopted unanimously by UN members in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. These goals encompass 17 categories geared toward addressing critical global challenges like poverty, hunger, education, and environmental protection.

Heartney criticized the SDGs as efforts towards a form of “soft global governance” that undermines U.S. sovereignty and does not align with the rights and interests of Americans. He attributed the rejection to a shifting political landscape, stating that these “globalist endeavors” were not supported at the ballot box. This announcement comes as part of a broader trend of the Trump administration stepping back from international sustainability initiatives, such as withdrawing from the Paris Agreement and suspending involvement in climate financing efforts.

As the world grapples with an estimated $4 trillion funding gap required to meet the Sustainable Development Goals, the U.S. stance could have significant implications for global efforts in sustainability and climate action.
