Spark e-Fuels Secures $2.4 Million to Innovate Sustainable Aviation Fuel

22 febbraio 2025

Climate tech startup Spark e-Fuels has successfully raised €2.3 million (approximately $2.4 million) in a pre-seed funding round aimed at advancing its innovative solution for producing clean fuels. The funds will help the company work towards decarbonizing the aviation sector and other hard-to-abate industries through the use of renewable energy.

The aviation industry faces significant challenges regarding emissions, with fuel accounting for the majority of its carbon footprint. Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) have emerged as a potential solution to reduce these emissions. However, the current production of SAF predominantly relies on plant-based feedstock, which can lead to competition with food sources and cause negative environmental impacts, such as deforestation and the usage of valuable arable land.

Moreover, airlines encounter difficulties in scaling up SAF usage due to limited supply and high costs compared to traditional fossil fuels. As of 2024, SAF represents only about 0.53% of global commercial fuel use.

Spark e-Fuels, founded in 2021 and based in Berlin, has developed a proprietary e-fuel technology designed to mitigate the feedstock and cost challenges associated with SAF. Their demand-responsive and load-flexible e-fuels production process connects directly to low-cost renewable energy sources, accommodating daily fluctuations and seasonal variations in energy availability. This adaptability not only reduces production costs but also maximizes output.

The company plans to build its first e-fuel pilot plant and expand its team to expedite technology development and commercialization efforts. Mathias Bösl, CEO and Co-Founder of Spark e-Fuels, emphasized the necessity of scalable and cost-competitive production for SAF to become the standard in the industry.

The funding round was led by climate tech-focused VC firm Nucleus Capital, along with contributions from investors like Zero Carbon Capital, IBB Ventures, Chemovator, Voyagers.io, and 1.5° Ventures. General Partner at Nucleus Capital, Isabella Fandrych, highlighted Spark’s innovative approach to integrating renewable energy in chemical production as crucial for both SAF and the broader chemical industry, which requires rapid decarbonization.
