The ESG Officer is primarily responsible for the development and execution of the company's ESG strategy. This involves building an Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS) that aligns with both the National Bank of Ukraine's regulations and the World Bank’s Environmental and Social Framework. Day-to-day duties include conducting environmental and social risk assessments for housing projects, preparing comprehensive ESG disclosures, and overseeing the Grievance Redress Mechanism. You will also be tasked with ensuring that partner banks meet specific environmental and social requirements, effectively cascading sustainability standards through the entire lending chain.

Key learning opportunities for this job

This role offers unparalleled exposure to international financial institution (IFI) standards, specifically the World Bank’s Environmental and Social Framework (ESS1–ESS10). You will gain deep expertise in implementing these rigorous global benchmarks within a national financial context. Additionally, you will be at the forefront of the NBU’s ESG roadmap, providing a unique vantage point on the evolution of sustainable finance regulation in Ukraine. Mentorship through the joint project with the World Bank will likely provide high-level training in risk management and green mortgage product development.

How does the ideal candidate look like (experience, skills)?

The ideal candidate brings a blend of financial sector knowledge and environmental expertise. A bachelor's degree in finance, law, or environmental studies is essential, paired with a solid understanding of GRI, CSRD, and IFC Performance Standards. To stand out, emphasize any direct experience you have with World Bank or EBRD environmental and social instruments such as SEPs or ESCPs. Demonstrating familiarity with the NBU’s specific ESG roadmap for 2026–2030 will show that you are forward-thinking and ready to hit the ground running. Highlight your ability to act as a bridge between technical ESG requirements and operational banking reality. The hiring team is looking for someone who can not only identify risks but also propose practical solutions for housing finance.

What aspects of the company's sustainability is this role likely to focus on?

By integrating these criteria into the lending process, the role supports the broader goal of sustainable urban development and the reconstruction of high-performing, low-carbon housing stock in Ukraine.

What are the main challenges someone in this role might face?

The most significant challenge will be operationalizing complex international standards within a relatively small team of 26 employees. Balancing the immediate needs of a national housing program with the meticulous reporting requirements of the World Bank requires high efficiency.
