The primary mission involves serving as the Product Owner for sustainability reporting within the automation divisions. You will be responsible for collecting and translating business requirements into technical specifications, ensuring that the Information Systems (IS) align with evolving ESG regulatory standards and internal sustainability goals. Key learning opportunities for this job

Candidates will gain deep exposure to enterprise-grade ESG data models and cloud-based analytics platforms in a large-scale manufacturing environment. You will learn how to navigate complex data dependencies in a matrix organization, mastering the art of aligning diverse divisional needs with a centralized corporate reporting strategy. Furthermore, the role offers significant training in Agile delivery practices and the practical application of global sustainability frameworks like the CSRD or GRI within a digital architecture. Mentorship from the Global Automation Data & Analytics team will help sharpen your skills in Power BI and SQL-based reporting within an industrial context.

How does the ideal candidate look like (experience, skills)?

The ideal candidate brings a blend of technical IS expertise and a solid understanding of sustainability reporting processes. You should have 3 to 5 years of experience in business analysis or data product ownership, preferably within a large enterprise or manufacturing firm. A degree in Information Systems, Sustainability, or Engineering is highly valued. Strong communication and stakeholder management skills are essential, as you must effectively speak the languages of both software developers and sustainability officers. Proficiency with BI tools like Power BI and an understanding of data governance principles are key technical requirements for success in this position.

Advice to stand out and make a successful application

To stand out, emphasize your experience in bridging the gap between non-technical business stakeholders and technical IT teams. Provide concrete examples of how you have translated a complex reporting requirement into a successful data solution or dashboard in the past. Research ABB's specific sustainability targets, such as their 2030 Sustainability Strategy, and explain how your analytical skills can help them achieve better data transparency. Demonstrating a proactive approach to solving data gaps or process inefficiencies will resonate strongly with the hiring team.

What aspects of the company's sustainability is this role likely to focus on?

This role is central to the company's transparency and accountability initiatives. It focuses specifically on the 'Environmental' and 'Governance' pillars by ensuring that carbon emissions, energy usage, and resource efficiency data are captured accurately across all automation divisions. You will likely spend significant time on decarbonization tracking and ensuring compliance with emerging digital reporting mandates. By refining the data architecture, you enable the company to provide a more granular view of its environmental footprint and the social impact of its industrial solutions.

What are the main challenges someone in this role might face?

One of the primary challenges will be standardizing data collection across highly diverse global divisions that may have different legacy systems or levels of data maturity. Ensuring consistency and quality in ESG metrics while moving at the speed of Agile development can be a complex balancing act. You may also face the challenge of evolving regulations, which requires the reporting systems to remain flexible and scalable. Navigating the internal politics of a large matrix organization to gain consensus on data ownership and process changes will require significant persistence and diplomacy.

How could a typical day look like for someone in this position?

A typical day might begin with a daily stand-up with the Data & Analytics team to review the development backlog and prioritize user stories for the next reporting cycle. You might then meet with a Sustainability Officer to clarify how a new regulation impacts specific data requirements for the manufacturing plants. Afternoons are often dedicated to solution validation, where you test new features in the reporting platform or analyze data flows to identify discrepancies. You will wrap up the day by documenting functional requirements or preparing a briefing for divisional stakeholders to promote the adoption of new analytics tools.

What are the opportunities for professional growth and development in this role?

There are clear paths toward Senior Product Ownership or leadership roles within the Global IS and Sustainability departments. As companies increasingly digitize their ESG efforts, your niche expertise in sustainability data architecture will be in high demand for lateral moves into strategic ESG consulting or data science. High-visibility projects within ABB's digital transformation roadmap provide opportunities to impress senior leadership. Successful delivery of global reporting solutions can lead to roles managing larger technical teams or overseeing the entire sustainability data strategy for the organization.

The main stakeholders you might be interacting with

You will interact daily with the Global Automation Data & Analytics team, including data engineers and developers who build the reporting solutions. You will also serve as a key partner to the Corporate Sustainability and ESG teams who define the reporting standards and compliance needs. Externally and internally, you will engage with Divisional Managers and process owners across ABB's global manufacturing footprint. Your role is to represent their needs to the technical teams and ensure that the final IS solutions are adopted effectively by these end-users.
