Finding sustainability jobs in emerging markets

Start with sectors, not job titles

Sustainability work may sit inside a dedicated team, or within operations, procurement, finance, agriculture, energy, or community programs. Search by the work an employer needs, not only for vacancies containing “sustainability” or “ESG.” Renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, water management, and waste and circular economy projects are useful starting points, but opportunities vary by country and employer.

Build a list of organizations active in your target area, then check their careers pages and the teams responsible for relevant projects. A role in a utility, agricultural business, development organization, or local supplier may involve sustainability outcomes without using that word in the title.

Choose a region and verify the local picture

Narrow your search to a country or a manageable group of countries. Look at the sectors represented in local job listings, employer project pages, industry associations, and public reports. These sources help you distinguish active work from broad claims about a region’s potential.

Pay attention to practical context: language, location, travel expectations, employer type, and whether a position requires local experience. Do not assume that roles or hiring practices are the same across Africa, Asia, or Latin America. Ask people working in the sector what organizations actually do and which skills are useful in that market.

Search across several channels

Use a mix of focused and general job sources. A sustainability-focused board can help surface relevant openings, while broader platforms and employer career pages may list roles under functional titles. Professional associations, events, alumni groups, and local sustainability networks can help you learn about organizations and opportunities.

Volunteering or internships can provide relevant experience, but assess each opportunity on its duties, supervision, and practical value. Do not treat unpaid work as a requirement for entering the field. When searching on CSR Jobs, start with the job board and relevant role categories such as sustainable procurement or climate and biodiversity.

Match your experience to the work

Translate previous experience into relevant evidence. A procurement candidate might describe supplier evaluation; an engineer could show project delivery; a finance professional may demonstrate risk analysis; and a community worker could explain stakeholder engagement. Not every position requires carbon accounting or reporting-framework expertise. Read the duties and required qualifications, then decide which skills are genuinely relevant.

Tailor your CV and cover letter to the employer’s stated needs. Use specific examples of what you did, the tools or methods you used, and the result you can substantiate. A concise sustainability CV guide can help you present that evidence clearly. If your experience is limited, a small project portfolio can show your approach, as explained in this portfolio guide.

Exercise: make a focused search plan

Choose one target country and one sector. Complete the template below before applying, and revise it as you learn more.

  • Country or area:
  • Sector and sustainability issue:
  • Three employers to investigate:
  • Two job-search channels to check weekly:
  • Search terms beyond “sustainability”:
  • Relevant experience I can evidence:
  • One skill gap to address, if required by target roles:
  • Questions to verify about location, duties, and eligibility:

Use the plan to guide applications, not to assume a particular role will exist. Check each vacancy’s details and use direct conversations to test your understanding of the work.
