Areim Secures €450 Million for Sustainable Data Center Expansion

8 mars 2025

Fund manager Areim has successfully raised €450 million (approximately USD $485 million) for its Areim DC Fund, bringing the total capital raised for the development of sustainable data centers in the Nordic region to €900 million (around USD $971 million). This funding will be utilized to expand EcoDataCenter, Areim’s subsidiary that specializes in designing and operating energy-efficient data centers powered entirely by renewable sources.

Founded in Stockholm in 2003, Areim is an independent fund manager and property owner engaged in various sectors, including light industrial, residential, office, retail, and data centers. In 2023, the Areim DC Fund took full ownership of EcoDataCenter, having acquired a majority stake in 2018.

Henrik Brinck Landelius, CEO of Areim, emphasized the robust interest from both new and existing investors as a strong endorsement of their strategy within the dedicated data center fund. He highlighted the growing demand for sustainable solutions in the Nordic market, especially as the sector faces increased activity and investment opportunities.

With the rapid rise of artificial intelligence affecting global energy consumption, the need for sustainability in data centers is becoming more pressing. The International Energy Agency (IEA) predicts that AI-driven data center power usage may double by 2026, posing challenges to decarbonization efforts. Major tech firms like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon have acknowledged the increasing energy demands associated with this growth.

EcoDataCenter is designed with key sustainability features, including a commitment to 100% renewable energy, a 98% reduction in carbon emissions compared to conventional markets, and a structure design that is three times more efficient in embodied carbon than traditional data centers.

Leif Andersson, founder of Areim and Chairman of EcoDataCenter, noted the inherent potential of sustainable data centers to meet the rising digital infrastructure needs and expressed confidence in leading the development of data centers in the Nordics amid escalating demand from digitalization and AI.
