Heineken N.V. has made significant sustainability strides, as highlighted in its recently published combined Financial and Sustainability Annual Report for 2024. One of the key achievements reported is that 84% of its global operations utilized renewable electricity, marking a substantial commitment to environmental responsibility. This follows a 34% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions since 2022, as the company advances toward its ambitious goal of achieving net-zero emissions across its operations by 2030.

The report details Heineken’s ongoing efforts under its “Brew a Better World” initiative, emphasizing its first alignment with the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). The company has introduced a global circularity strategy, leading to the sale of 39% of its beer in reusable packaging and achieving 44% recycled content in its bottles and cans. The aim is to increase these figures to 43% and 50%, respectively, by 2030.

Heineken’s focus on social responsibility is also noteworthy. The company reports that women now hold 30% of senior management positions, reaching this goal a year ahead of its 2025 target, and aims for 40% by 2030. Additionally, 99.7% of assessed employees earn a fair wage, and Heineken has implemented safety improvements that have reduced its Total Recordable Injury Rate.

To tackle Scope 3 emissions, which encompass indirect emissions from the supply chain, Heineken has reduced these by 14% since 2022, with specific cuts in agricultural emissions by 23% and energy-based emissions by 11%. Collaborative efforts include launching the REfresh Alliance, which involves multiple beverage companies to enhance suppliers’ adoption of renewable electricity.

In terms of water conservation, Heineken has reduced water usage by 11% since 2018 and has expanded its water balancing initiatives, achieving a 100% balance in operations in Indonesia. The company has also initiated reforestation projects in Brazil, Nigeria, and Ethiopia, further contributing to its environmental sustainability goals.

Joanna Price, Heineken’s Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, affirmed that sustainability has become central to the company’s operations while acknowledging the ongoing challenges. With its Brew a Better World 2030 strategy, Heineken remains committed to integrating sustainable practices into its core business model.
