Preparing for sustainability leadership roles

17 de novembro de 2025

Preparing for sustainability leadership means showing how you make decisions, work across functions, and help other people deliver. Technical knowledge remains useful, but a leadership application needs evidence of responsibility beyond completing your own analysis.

Define the responsibility you want to take on

Read relevant vacancies and separate technical expertise from coordination, people management, budget responsibility, and executive communication. A project lead, a sustainability manager, and a head of function may have different authority and support.

Choose a responsibility you can practise in your current setting with agreement from the people involved. It could be coordinating a reporting cycle, leading a supplier-data improvement project, or presenting an options paper to a budget holder. State the boundaries of your authority and who owns the final decision.

Practise influence through a shared decision

Map the colleagues whose work affects the objective. Ask what they need to deliver, what constraints they face, and what information would help them decide. A proposal is easier to assess when it explains the work, dependencies, options, and uncertainty.

These are examples to adapt, not outcomes achieved by real candidates.

Adapt how you lead to the situation

A new colleague may need a clear task, examples, and frequent feedback. An experienced specialist may need room to make technical recommendations and a clear route for review. Discuss expectations rather than assuming one leadership style will suit every person or problem.

Invite people to raise missing data, disagreement, and delivery risks early. Separate an uncertain estimate from a missed commitment, and avoid pressuring colleagues to present incomplete evidence as a finished result. When priorities change, make the trade-off explicit rather than silently adding more work.

For a hypothetical exercise, take a delayed reporting project and prepare a conversation with the data owner. Explain the missing input, its consequence, and the options. Ask what support or decision would make a revised plan realistic. This tests coordination without inventing a successful result.

Translate technical work without overstating its value

An audience in finance or operations needs to understand what a finding means for a decision. Explain the method and limits, then describe the options and the assumptions behind any forecast benefit. A proposed cost saving or emissions reduction is not an achieved outcome.

Know when to involve a specialist. Climate, nature, reporting, social topics, and procurement can require different expertise. A leader does not need to claim personal mastery of every standard, but should make review responsibilities and uncertainty visible.

Build a record of feedback and increasing responsibility

Agree a development goal, a suitable assignment, a feedback source, and a review date. Ask colleagues what helped them make progress and what made coordination harder. Record changes you made after that feedback.

A mentor, a cross-functional assignment, or training can support development where available. None guarantees promotion. Judge an opportunity by the responsibility, supervision, and learning it offers rather than the title alone.

When applying, distinguish a team result from your own contribution. Use the CV guide to explain your part, and include permitted examples in a portfolio. Compare current sustainability manager roles to check which capabilities the employer actually needs.
