BPCL Trials Geocell Tech to Reuse Plastic Waste in Roads

July 15, 2025

Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), in partnership with the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), has launched a 1,280 m² field trial of its new Geocell technology. This technical textile uses 20–25 tonnes of end-of-life and multi-layered plastic waste to reinforce road construction on the DND–Faridabad–KMP Expressway in New Delhi, supporting India’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan and Net Zero goals.

Key Technical and Environmental Benefits

  • Enhanced pavement strength and durability, validated in plant trials with TATA Projects
  • Economical use of mixed municipal plastic waste, including multi-layered plastics not covered by current IRC standards
  • Scalable model for infrastructure projects seeking circular-economy solutions

Implications for Sustainability Careers

The roll-out of Geocell underscores growing demand for professionals who can bridge research, project implementation, and waste management:

Emerging Roles in Waste-Based Infrastructure

  • Sustainability R&D Manager: Drive pilot programs to integrate recycled materials into construction
  • Sustainable Procurement Specialist: Source and certify mixed-plastic feedstocks
  • ESG Reporting Analyst: Quantify emissions and circular-economy impact for stakeholders
