# Corporate Sustainability Manager

This role owns WSP UK and Ireland's corporate giving portfolio, from the WSP Foundation and Charity of the Year partnership to employee volunteering and the budgets and reporting that sit behind them. You are also the person accountable for how the firm collects, validates and reports corporate social value data, working with an external measurement provider to turn that evidence into clear insight for senior leadership.

The wider purpose is to make the firm's stated ambition to generate £500M of embedded and additional social value between 2025 and 2027 credible, not just claimed. WSP operates across infrastructure, engineering and the built environment, so the social value it reports feeds into public sector contracts, client bids and community relationships where verifiable evidence carries real weight.

This suits someone who has run community investment or social value programmes inside a large, matrixed organisation and is comfortable being the central point of contact for policy, data quality and partner relationships at the same time.

## Job FAQs

### What are the main missions and responsibilities of this role?

The core of this role is running WSP UK and Ireland's corporate giving programme. That covers the WSP Foundation, the Charity of the Year partnership and employee volunteering, along with the annual plans, budgets and internal reporting that keep those activities running. You would maintain the policies and guidance colleagues use, act as the main point of contact for programme questions and escalate sensitive or strategic matters to the Social Impact Lead.

The second major strand is social value measurement. You would manage how corporate social value data is collected, validated and reported, own the governance and quality assurance around that data, and work with an external measurement provider to coordinate reporting requirements. Producing clear insight on social value performance for senior leadership is a recurring deliverable.

Alongside this, you would work with the graduate rotation that supports programme coordination, and collaborate with sustainability colleagues to improve metrics and data capture. The role is hands-on, so expect to be doing the work as well as coordinating it.

### Key learning opportunities for this job

You would deepen your knowledge of social value measurement frameworks, particularly TOMs or comparable platforms, and learn how a large consultancy builds assurance around social value claims. That is a specialised skill set in growing demand as social value commitments become part of public sector contracts.

Programme and grant management experience would develop too. Running the WSP Foundation, Charity of the Year and volunteering cycles gives exposure to budgeting, partner management and communications at scale. Working with an external measurement provider would also show you how third-party data relationships are structured and governed.

Mentorship could come from the Social Impact Lead and wider Corporate Sustainability team, and the firm's size means exposure to how sustainability functions operate across a global business. The graduate rotation you coordinate also offers a chance to develop people-management skills.

### How does the ideal candidate look like (experience, skills)?

The posting points to someone with hands-on experience managing social impact, social value, corporate giving, community investment or responsible business programmes. Programme or project management skills matter, since the role coordinates multiple activities, deadlines and stakeholders at once. Budget management experience, including financial planning and monitoring expenditure, is explicitly required.

Communication is central. You would need to produce clear guidance and reports, and engage confidently with colleagues, senior stakeholders and external charity partners. Experience working with charities, community partners or employee networks is expected, along with experience of social value measurement and impact reporting.

Desirable extras include familiarity with TOMs or a comparable measurement framework, experience managing grants or fundraising programmes, and having worked in a complex or matrixed organisation. Background in professional services, infrastructure or the built environment would help, given WSP's sectors. Sound judgement and the confidence to escalate risks appropriately round out the profile.

### Advice to stand out and make a successful application

Your application should speak directly to the two halves of the role: corporate giving programme management and social value measurement. Give concrete examples of programmes you have run, including budgets you have managed and partners you have worked with. If you have used TOMs or a comparable framework, say so plainly and describe what you did with the data.

WSP's stated ambition is £500M of social value between 2025 and 2027, so showing that you understand what credible evidence looks like in that context would strengthen your case. Explain how you have validated data, handled quality assurance and turned findings into something senior stakeholders could act on. Vague claims about passion for sustainability will not carry much weight against that requirement.

For the cover letter, connect your experience to the specific programme mix: the WSP Foundation, Charity of the Year, volunteering and wider giving. Naming the realities of coordinating across a large, matrixed organisation, and how you keep colleagues engaged, would show you understand the job rather than just the sector.

### What aspects of the company's sustainability is this role likely to focus on?

The role sits squarely in the social side of ESG. Your focus would be corporate giving and social value measurement, which means the WSP Foundation, the Charity of the Year partnership, volunteering and the wider community investment portfolio all fall within your remit. The environmental and governance work sits with other colleagues in the team.

A significant part of the focus is the firm's target of £500M in embedded and additional social value between 2025 and 2027. That figure depends on credible evidence, so you would be working on the metrics, data capture and assurance processes that make the claim defensible. This likely includes working with frameworks such as TOMs or a comparable social value measurement platform.

The role also connects to WSP's client-facing work. As an engineering and infrastructure consultancy, the firm bids for public sector and regulated contracts where social value commitments carry contractual weight, so the corporate programme you manage could feed into how the business demonstrates those commitments.

### What are the main challenges someone in this role might face?

One likely challenge is data quality. Social value measurement depends on colleagues across a large, matrixed organisation submitting accurate information on time, and you would be the person chasing, validating and defending that data. When the firm has publicly committed to £500M of social value between 2025 and 2027, the pressure to make the evidence stand up to scrutiny is real.

Another is balancing programme delivery with reporting cycles. Corporate giving activity, volunteering and Charity of the Year work are relationship-heavy and can generate sensitive situations, while measurement work is analytical and deadline-driven. Moving between the two modes regularly could be demanding.

Finally, influencing without direct authority across a business of more than 12,100 people in the UK and Ireland takes persistence. You would need to keep colleagues engaged with policies and data requests that sit outside their day jobs.

### How could a typical day look like for someone in this position?

A typical day could split between programme coordination and data work. You might start by clearing enquiries from colleagues about the WSP Foundation or Charity of the Year activity, then spend time reviewing social value figures submitted by the measurement provider before they go into a leadership report. Meetings with charity partners, internal sustainability colleagues or the graduate rotation would break up the analytical work.

The rhythm likely shifts with the annual programme cycle. Around Charity of the Year launches or volunteering campaigns, your calendar could fill with communications, budget tracking and partner calls, while reporting deadlines push the balance toward data validation and drafting. Ad hoc escalations on sensitive community or charitable matters would also land with you.

Because the role spans a UK and Ireland business, some coordination across offices and time zones is likely, though the core team sits within the Corporate Sustainability function.

### What are the opportunities for professional growth and development in this role?

Social value measurement is a niche and expanding field, so building expertise here could open doors across consultancy, infrastructure and the public sector. The role gives you direct exposure to how a large firm governs its social value data, which is transferable to other organisations facing similar reporting expectations.

Within WSP, success in this role could lead toward the Social Impact Lead position or broader corporate sustainability roles. The firm operates in over 50 countries, and its UK and Ireland business alone has more than 12,100 people, so lateral moves into other sustainability functions are plausible over time.

Managing the graduate rotation also gives you early people-management experience. High-visibility work such as producing insights for senior leadership could raise your internal profile, which tends to matter when progression opportunities arise.

### The main stakeholders you might be interacting with

Internally, you would work closely with the Social Impact Lead, who is your escalation point and likely your line manager or closest senior colleague. Sustainability team colleagues are key partners on improving metrics and reporting processes, and the graduate rotation reports into programme coordination work you direct. Senior leadership are the audience for your social value insights.

Externally, charity and community partners are central. You would manage relationships with the Charity of the Year partner and other charitable organisations, and act as the main contact for how WSP engages with them. The social value measurement provider is another significant external relationship, since they supply much of the data you validate and report.

Beyond that, colleagues across the wider UK and Ireland business would come to you for guidance on corporate giving policy and programme activity, which means your stakeholder map stretches well past the immediate team.
