# Advisor, International Sustainability

You will own the design and scaling of Elanco's livestock sustainability programs outside the US, from writing the carbon project design documents to overseeing measurement, monitoring, reporting and verification (MMRV) and adapting the UpLook platform to local production systems. In practice, this means turning standards like the GHG Protocol, SBTi, Verra and Gold Standard into workable programs for dairy and beef producers in Brazil, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and beyond.

Carbon markets only work if the reductions behind a credit are real and verifiable. This role sits where that credibility is built: helping Elanco sell Scope 3 and offset-linked programs to food chain buyers while keeping the claims defensible for producers and auditors. The international scope means the programs you design will shape how livestock emissions are measured and rewarded in several of the world's largest beef and dairy regions.

This suits someone who has designed or verified carbon projects before, understands beef and dairy production from the inside, and can hold a technical conversation with a producer in the morning and a legal team on contract terms in the afternoon.

## Job FAQs

### What are the main missions and responsibilities of this role?

The core mission is to take Elanco's sustainability assets, mainly carbon programs tied to dairy and beef production, and make them work outside the United States. That means owning **end-to-end carbon project design**: drafting program design documents, aligning with the central Sustainability Program Design team, and guiding MMRV and operational design for markets such as Brazil, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. You would also be the internal reference on standards like the GHG Protocol, SBTi, Verra and Gold Standard, and represent Elanco in global working groups.

A second pillar is **technical innovation and UpLook localization**. UpLook is Elanco's platform for capturing on-farm sustainability data, and this role leads its adaptation to regional production systems, feeding local producer needs into road-mapping and prioritization decisions. You would partner with Global Strategy on commercialization pathways and with operations on deployment.

Finally, the role has a strong external and commercial dimension: supporting food chain and off-take partner teams with technical expertise, helping with CPG and buyer contracting, managing consultants, auditors and technology vendors, and contributing to thought leadership through panels and white papers. Underlying all of this is **program-level risk management** and co-developing contracts with Legal and Operations.

### Key learning opportunities for this job

The learning curve here is steep in the best sense. You would deepen your command of **voluntary carbon market standards** by applying them to real project designs rather than studying them in the abstract, and you would get hands-on exposure to third-party validation and verification engagements across multiple jurisdictions.

Because the role spans the US, Brazil, New Zealand, Australia, Mexico and Canada, you would build a comparative understanding of how **dairy and beef carbon footprinting** differs by production system and regulatory context. The international reporting frameworks piece means you would also stay current on how disclosure rules are shifting in each market.

On the softer side, the role offers exposure to contract negotiation alongside Legal, vendor management, and public representation of Elanco in industry working groups and panels. Working directly under the Vice President, Livestock Sustainability likely means visibility into how sustainability strategy is set at a senior level, which is valuable preparation for a more senior strategy or program leadership role.

### How does the ideal candidate look like (experience, skills)?

The posting is unusually specific, which helps. You need a **BS in animal science, animal biology or a related field**, plus either 3 or more years of relevant experience or a PhD with 1 year. Above that, Elanco asks for 5 or more years of progressive experience in sustainability, agribusiness or marketing within animal health or livestock.

The technical bar is real: deep understanding of **carbon markets and Scope 3 GHG accounting**, demonstrated experience applying methodologies and standards in carbon project design (voluntary carbon market work, consulting or MMRV design), and a strong grasp of dairy and feedlot or beef production systems including direct engagement with producers. Familiarity with dairy and beef carbon footprinting approaches and with third-party validation and verification is expected.

On soft skills, this role needs someone who can influence across functions without direct authority, since program design depends on buy-in from commercial, technical and operations teams. English is required; **Spanish or Portuguese is preferred**, which fits the Latin American focus of several key markets. Willingness to travel up to 40% globally is a practical requirement.

### Advice to stand out and make a successful application

Lead with the projects, not the job titles. Elanco is explicit about wanting **carbon project design and MMRV experience**, so your CV should name the standards you have worked with (Verra, Gold Standard, GHG Protocol, SBTi), the markets or production systems involved, and your role in validation or verification. Concrete numbers help: hectares enrolled, producers engaged, credits issued or verified.

Because the role covers dairy and beef in Latin America and Oceania, demonstrate direct producer engagement. A short line about working with feedlots or dairy farms, in the relevant language, carries more weight than a list of frameworks. If you speak Spanish or Portuguese, say so early and give an example of using it professionally.

The cover letter should address the commercial side too. This is not a pure technical role: it involves buyer contracting, vendor management and representing Elanco externally. Show that you can explain a carbon program to a food company buyer and to a producer in the same week. Finally, note Elanco's stated use of automated tools to screen applications against job-related criteria: mirror the posting's own language for standards, MMRV and Scope 3 so your application reads clearly to both the tool and the human reviewer.

### What aspects of the company's sustainability is this role likely to focus on?

The focus is **Scope 3 emissions in livestock supply chains** and the carbon markets built around them. Elanco sells animal health products into farms, and its sustainability programs aim to help food companies meet supply chain emission targets by rewarding producers for measurable reductions. This role designs and scales those programs internationally, which means the day-to-day sustainability work is carbon accounting, project methodology and verification rather than broad ESG reporting.

The geographic spread matters. Brazil, Mexico, Australia and New Zealand are major beef and dairy exporters, so programs designed for those markets could influence how **livestock emissions are measured and credited** well beyond Elanco's own footprint. The UpLook platform adds a data dimension: localizing it means the underlying data models reflect regional production systems, which is what makes claims credible to auditors and buyers.

There is also a governance thread. Applying standards consistently, managing program-level risk and co-developing contracts with Legal are the mechanisms that keep carbon claims defensible. The role likely touches Elanco's external positioning too, through working groups and thought leadership on livestock sustainability.

### What are the main challenges someone in this role might face?

The hardest part is likely **credibility under scrutiny**. Carbon markets for livestock are contested, and programs that look sound on paper can fail in verification or draw criticism from NGOs and buyers. Designing MMRV that holds up across very different production systems, from Brazilian feedlots to New Zealand pasture, is a genuine technical and operational challenge.

A second challenge is internal alignment. The role must secure buy-in from commercial, technical, legal and operations teams who have different priorities, and do so across affiliates in multiple countries. Contracting carbon programs with producers and buyers is slow, and the role carries program-level risk responsibility without necessarily owning the operational levers.

Finally, the **40% travel** and the sheer breadth of the remit (design, standards, commercialization, vendor management, thought leadership) mean prioritization is constant. Waiting for perfect data before acting would stall programs, so judgment about when a program is good enough to launch is likely part of the job.

### How could a typical day look like for someone in this position?

A typical day might start with a call to a regional affiliate in Brazil or Mexico to review how a carbon program is performing and what the local operations team needs from UpLook. Mid-morning could be a working session with the Sustainability Program Design team on a design document, or with Legal on contract language for a buyer agreement.

Afternoons often involve external contact: a call with a consultant or auditor managing a validation engagement, or technical support to a food chain account leader preparing a pitch to a CPG buyer. There would be regular touchpoints with EKS Operations on platform localization and with Global Strategy on commercialization pathways.

Not every day looks the same. During a verification cycle or a new market launch, the balance shifts heavily toward document review and coordination. Travel weeks, up to 40% of the time, would be spent with producers, partners or industry events, which likely replaces the desk work rather than adding to it.

### What are the opportunities for professional growth and development in this role?

Reporting directly to the **Vice President, Livestock Sustainability** puts this role close to strategic decision-making. A successful Advisor could grow into a program leadership position, either deepening in carbon markets and MMRV or broadening into overall livestock sustainability strategy.

The international remit is itself a growth asset. Building a track record across multiple markets and standards makes the role a strong platform for a global or regional sustainability lead position, inside Elanco or elsewhere in agribusiness. Representing the company in global working groups and publishing thought leadership raises external visibility, which matters for senior sustainability careers.

The commercialization angle is worth noting. Experience taking a sustainability asset to market, with buyer contracting and vendor management attached, is rarer than technical carbon expertise and opens paths toward commercial sustainability or strategy roles. Lateral moves into food chain sales or program design are plausible given the cross-functional exposure.

### The main stakeholders you might be interacting with

Internally, the closest relationships are with the **Sustainability Program Design team**, the EKS Operations group that runs UpLook, and Global Strategy on commercialization. Commercial teams, including food chain and off-take partner account leaders, rely on this role for technical expertise, while Legal and Operations co-develop program contracts. Regional affiliates in Brazil, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and Canada are central, since they implement programs on the ground.

Externally, the role manages relationships with **third-party consultants, auditors and technology partners**, and supports CPG and other buyers through contracting and program implementation. Producers are indirect but important stakeholders: the design has to reflect their production systems and data realities, and the posting expects direct engagement experience.

There is also an industry-facing dimension. Elanco sits in global working groups on standards, and this role represents the company there, which means engaging with peers, standard bodies and sometimes critics. Managing those relationships with consistency across markets is part of the job.
